Objet D’amour or l’amour de Dieu?

What is your ‘transitional love object’? What is something that you have clung to so tightly, that to let it go would be like losing a piece of yourself? Maybe for some it is a blanket for childhood, or maybe a stuffed animal that was given by a loved one, maybe for some, like me, it’s a journal. Maybe it’s not even something, but in fact someone. Whatever that object may be, it means something special, correct?

However, are we missing something? We take so much time concentrating on our affection for one specific thing, that we may forget what our real objet d’amour should be. That being our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. What better object of affection could we ask for, besides the one that gave it all?! Although we may sometimes disagree, we can go without our childhood/adulthood affections; however can we truly go without our greatest objet d’amour?

Perhaps we shouldn’t even classify our Lord as simply an objet d’amour, but instead our l’amour de Dieu, love of God. After all, can we really place our love for a blankie in the same category as our love for the Lord? The very creator of love? Have we any right to compare the Maker of the Heavens and the earth, to the simple affection we contain in our own hearts for simple ‘objects’?

Although there is nothing wrong with our objet d’amours, we must always remember to not put it before or above our l’amour de Dieu. For the greatest gift we have all been given is life, and the ability to love. Where these gifts come from, is were we should return them. You are the Lord’s objet d’amour, so allow Him to be your l’amour de Dieu.

So cherish your objet d’amour, whether it be a something or someone, hold on tight to it. Just remember who holds your heart.

I challenge you- who owns your heart? Who do you place your love and affection in? Is more of your heart focused on material than spiritual? Is your heart contained with selfish pride or hopeless love? I challenge you to fill your heart with the Love of our Savior! Place your l’amour de Dieu at the core of your heart, and let His love beat inside you.
